MOUNT WASHINGTON - 90065
Mount Washington is a lush hillside neighborhood in North East Los Angeles (NELA). It is centrally located on the East side of LA but high above the city in a quiet, serene and green environment. From Mount Washington it is a 10 minute drive to Downtown LA, Pasadena, Silver Lake or Glendale. Mount Washington was founded in 1909 when the Mount Washington hotel was built at the top of the mountain on San Rafael Ave. Because the roads were too steep for cars to climb, the hotel was accessed by a funicular. Today the historic hotel is the site of the Self-Realization fellowship, an organization dedicated to teaching meditation. I can’t think of a more appropriate place for the Self Realization Fellowship!
Mount Washington is the home of the Southwest Museum built in 1907. It has its own Metro Gold Line stop. Some compare Mount Washington to the Forest Moon Endor, home of the Ewoks, because it is very green and lush and some of the houses there resemble treehouses. Mount Washington is a very quiet, mellow neighborhood with many yoga practitioners, midwives and generally progressive residents. The second best elementary school on LA’s east side is at the top of Mt. Washington and, just like for Ivanhoe School in Silver Lake, parents covet properties in the Mount Washington school district. Mount Washington has some charming old character homes along with many newer homes built on steep hillsides with stunning views of LA, sometimes going all the way to the ocean. This neighborhood is a better value for hillside living than Silver Lake or the Hollywood Hills. A newer home here will cost 20-35% less than the same home would in these other two neighborhoods. Mount Washington is situated very close to surrounding metropolitan centers and does not have any commercial areas. It is entirely residential but there are retail areas in close proximity. |
