Sky Minor's Eagle Rock Blog

Eagle Rock is where I work, live and play. It's a wonderful little community in the hills of Los Angeles just North of Downtown LA. I love living here so I thought I'd share what makes zip code 90041 so special to me.

Eagle Rock is a neighborhood in North East Los Angeles that is bordered by Glendale to the West, Highland Park to the South and Pasadena to the East. It is a 15 minute drive to Downtown LA or Silver Lake and 30 minutes to the West side. Eagle Rock is a hip, eclectic and artistic neighborhood traditionally preferred by writers, musicians and an occasional Hollywood celebrity. The "creative class" of Los Angeles favors Eagle Rock and neighboring Highland Park for their bohemian, artsy, laid back vibe. Many of the houses in Eagle Rock are of the classic craftsman style and are being renovated by newcomers, making the area a hotspot of gentrification on the up and coming East side of  LA. The schools in Eagle Rock are good, which makes it appealing for parents and those who are looking to start families. The neighborhood has an anytown USA feel to it, with a pedestrian friendly strip on Colorado Blvd, frequent events like music festivals and block parties, many independently owned businesses and a good sense of community.

Eagle Rock has some of the best elementary schools in the LAUSD system. Dahlia Heights Elementary, Delevan Drive Elementary and Eagle Rock Elementary are some of the standout K-6 schools. Eagle Rock Elementary is home to one of the three highly gifted magnet schools in Los Angeles, admission to which requires an IQ of 145 or higher. Coveted charter school Renaissance Arts Academy (or RenArts for short) is in Eagle Rock and the Eagle Rock High School scores well against it's LAUSD peers. Occidental College, A renowned liberal arts university, has been in Eagle Rock for over 100 years. Notable Oxy Alumni are Barack Obama and Ben Affleck.

Eagle Rock has a great collection of restaurants, so many that even I have yet to eat at all of them. All along Eagle Rock Blvd and Colorado Blvd are some of the best eats on the East side. Yelp is a good guide to find your way as a foodie in 90041. Some of the notable culinary adventures in Eagle Rock:

This list is barely scratching the surface, there are nearly 100 restaurants in the 4.25 square miles of Eagle Rock. As the area continues to evolve, more are opening their doors. Eagle Rock has a handful of nightlife destinations, Bowling Alley/Chinese Restaurant/Live Music/Kareoke/Dive Bar All Star Lanes is a local favorite. The Black Boar and La Fuente are two good bars and the York Blvd. strip in Highland Park is very nearby. Eagle Rock is a Foodies' dream neighborhood.

With regard to the Real Estate in Eagle Rock, there is usually a shortage of houses and a surplus of buyers. The houses are not new or necessarily in great condition (Most homes in Eagle Rock are 50-80 years old), but there is strong demand for houses in the area. There are numerous original craftsman bungalows built in the 1920s and 30s that fetch a premium. Prices in Eagle Rock are typically lower than neighboring Glendale or Pasadena for similar properties. Eagle Rock has a fairly stagnant population, once people move in they don't usually move out. Because of this, there are usually not many properties available on the market, and the good ones sell quickly. Great properties occasionally come on the market that have been neglected and sell for bargain prices to buyers willing to restore them to their original glory.
